5 classroom structures: quick practice, math talk, building concepts, helping community, student leaders

•working with objects and making drawings of math situations

• working with other students and sharing problem-solving strategies with them

• writing and solving problems and connecting math to daily life

• helping classmates learn

Math Talk: fosters the development of mathematical language and communication in order to understand concepts rather than merely following a sequence of procedures. Learners explain their mathematical thinking. Children are asked to solve problems, explain their solutions, answer questions, and justify their answers. They use proof drawings as a reference for their explanations.

  • Questioning: Asks questions that could be explored using mathematics

  • Applying Strategies: Uses objects, actions, imagery, technology and/or trial and error to explore mathematical problems

  • Communicating: Describes mathematical situations using everyday language, actions, materials and informal recordings

  • Reasoning: Uses concrete materials and/or pictorial representations to support conclusions

  • Reflecting: Links mathematical ideas and makes connections and generalizations
